The Reason to Upgrade
The previous generations of PlayStations came packed in a glossy black behemoth. They weighed 9.5 pounds and measured 3.9 by 10.7 by 12.7 inches (HWD). This means that took up quite some space in your entertainment center. Now, the new console has been trimmed down to a much more pleasant 2.5 by 11.4 by 11.4 inches and 6.7 pounds. You can now basically stash your player in smaller spaces. The new PS3 also comes with a 120GB 2.5-inch hard drive, roughly the same size as a notebook. Like its predecessors, swapping in a new drive takes minutes. This is all because of the slot-loaded with a Blu-ray drive.
When speaking about connectivity, the new PS3 comes with the same ports and options. The PS3 comes with a pair of front-mounted USB ports so that you can charge the DualShock 3 controller without experiencing difficulty. It also comes with the Ethernet, HDMI, optical digital audio output (SPDIF), and a proprietary AV port. These other ports are found at the back of the unit. It offers an HDMI port with support for 1080p. There’s also integrated 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, so that you can easily connect to wireless networks. When you want to exchange entertainment with other consoles, you can easily stream from the same network.
Sony not only made the internal components impressively smaller, you are able to save on energy in the long use. This is made possible with the Kill-A-Watt meter so that it is able to measure power consumption. During Blu-ray movie playbacks, the player uses only 71 watts. Other models use as much as 104 watts. When you look at it, you can save as much as 32 percent on energy.
