You may notice that the master power switch is gone. What Sony did is put in a new button in front that is nice and responsive so it no longer requires too firm a touch just to turn on the power. To achieve the small size, the internal architecture has been completely reorganized and changed. All these changes were applied from the main semiconductors and power supply unit down to the cooling mechanism. What makes it even more unique is the fact that the power supply has been built into the system itself. Say goodbye to dealing with giant external power supplies.

The new 45nm version of the Cell processor powers the player. It is able to run at the same speed as the 60nm processor. Nonetheless, it is still more energy efficient. Representatives from Sony claim that that power consumption has been reduced to 250 watts, as compared to the previous 280 watts. To maintain the internal heat so that the console won’t destroy itself is the cooling fan. The great thing is that this fan is but a hum is faint so you won’t get distracted from your play. And if you watch a movie using the player, the light breeze the fan will be warm but not too hot. With earlier models, you could prop your unit up vertically or lay it down horizontally. The Slim, however, is mainly designed to be placed in a horizontal position. If you want it otherwise, you can get the stand so that you can set it up vertically and not fret about tipping it over.
